Hurricane Irene

She passed well west of us here, centering more on Hudson River valley than Thames River valley. Our house here is well sheltered by a steep hill to the south, hill and house to the west, and house to the east. Only the north is exposed very much, and not much wind comes that way from this kind of storm.

While the house was sheltered, there was no denying the roar of the powerful gusts blowing through the tops of the large trees in the yard.

We never lost power here. Most of what fell to the ground beside rain were leaves and, near the end, a couple of medium-sized tree branches which landed harmlessly in the neighbor's back yard.

I had the fire radio scanner on, and NLFD was very busy all over town dealing with downed branches and wires. Two houses down in the Pequot Colony part of town were damaged by falling trees (one one one). And one of those houses had to be evacuated because the FD deemed it so damaged as to be unsafe.

Everything seems so lush soft and clean now, after the storm. A full billowing breeze seems to embrace all.

Good night, Irene.
